The size difference is the point

PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is the right choice for logos and line art and the wrong one for photographs and screenshots of photographs. A full-screen PNG screenshot routinely runs to several megabytes; the same image as a JPG is often under 300 KB with no difference you can see.

That matters whenever something is measuring your file: email attachment limits, upload forms with a size cap, or a website that has started to feel slow.

What happens to transparency

JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas have to become something. This tool fills them with white, which is what almost every use case wants — it matches paper, most documents and most web pages. If you need the transparency, stay with PNG.

When not to do this

JPEG compression works by discarding detail the eye tends not to miss. On photographs that is invisible. On screenshots containing small text, on logos, and on line drawings with hard edges, it produces faint smudging around the edges — the artefacts are subtle but they are there, and they accumulate if you re-save repeatedly. For those images PNG is the correct format and the extra size is the price of it.

Common questions

How much smaller will the file be?

For photographs, typically 80–95% smaller. For simple graphics and flat-colour images the saving is smaller, and PNG may already be the better format.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are filled with white, because JPEG cannot store transparency. If you need it preserved, keep the file as PNG.

Will the image quality drop?

The conversion uses quality 90, which is visually lossless for photographs. On screenshots with small text you may notice slight softening around the letters.

Can I convert a batch?
